darjeeling dining table

reclaim, restore, re-train. Rare saal wood is reclaimed from old Indian railroad ties, restored, and pieced in a natural plank mosaic dining surface of raw awe. Supported on industrial metal square tube legs, blackened with exposed welding marks. Legs are inset flush at the sides and notched in the top, becoming one with the patchwork. Wood is left unfinished in its natural state. Seats up to 8. -Reclaimed, unfinished wood top is from old rail ties -Top is plank style construction with plugged holes -Tops will vary (see more shots) -Wood characteristics: grain, knots and seasonal splitting are inherent to product -Raw metal legs have grind marks and are finished with clear powdercoat -Legs will vary

A Positive Experience
Date: 03/02/2010
I have waited about 25 years to buy a table... glad I waited. Love it... and my husband is happy also (he wanted something solid... it really can't be moved by one person alone). I have two small boys so I followed a previous reviewers advice and finished the table with four coats of Tung oil... and really it just makes it better looking.

love love love this table
Date: 02/07/2010
I love this table and could not be happier. I had been eyeing it for a couple of months when I finally decided to purchase it. I love the look, it's both rustic and modern all at once which means that it will look great no matter where I decide to live.I just ordered the vapor chairs to go with it and truly think that they will complete the look.

Beautiful...
Date: 01/19/2010
The table is absolutely amazing! It has a modern, industrial feel to it and is a real centerpiece to our home. I loved the look of the raw wood, so was hesitant to finish it (as recommended). We used beeswax and the table only got better! I couldn't be happier with the table. Sturdy/heavy and beautiful! No complaints...highly recommend it!

Wonderful Unfinished Table
Date: 01/16/2010
Great table. Extremely heavy. The wood comes completely unfinished, which would lead to water marks and other blemishes. I sanded it down with a 320 grit sandpaper, washed with mineral spirts and applyed two coats of Minwax Tung Oil - it's amazing how much character comes out of the wood and its water resistant. My only comment about the process is you may want to do it before they install the legs however be prepared for a very heavy move.
Great table, I'm sure it will last a lifetime

will last a lifetime
Date: 01/13/2010
We bought this based on the reviews - so I figure I should write one as well. We had only seen the pictures online - VERY please when the table came. It is awesome. Applied 4 coats of tung oil to seal it. We have a young family and tend to be hard on our things. This table looks like it could easily handle repeated sanding and finishing - it solid all the way through. With it's timeless simplicity and ability to refinish it should last us forever.

The last Table you'll ever need to buy
Date: 01/06/2010
I love this table. I've been visiting it at the store for months and finally broken down and bought it. It gets even better after you seal it. But if you're going to be "green" I don't think buying a table that has reclaimed wood from India has a very low carbon footprint. The wood is amazing but I don't want to be an environmental hypocrite.

Table that will last a lifetime
Date: 01/04/2010
What a way to start off our New Year! This table is amazing and has exceeded our expectations!! We feel it is a table that will last a lifetime. As recommended, we used mineral spirits to clean the surface, tung oil several applications, steel wool to sand in between coats and finally a paste wax. The results are a table of unique mosaic wood pieces with a warmer sheen to bring out the luster of all the colors of the wood. The delivery guys were fantastic, bringing in the table already assembled, carefully wrapped. If you love unique, rustic with a modern edge then this is for you!

Love the table
Date: 12/08/2009
Bought this table based upon photo and customer reviews alone. Love that it's reclaimed wood -- and has rustic, unique and modern look to it -- and is very substantial/ heavy. I finished it (similar to the helpful reviews below) with oils and beeswax -- and it looks beautiful. End result appears exactly as I wanted/ expected.

Beautiful, substantial piece
Date: 12/08/2009
Just like everyone else, I love this table! It's really stunning in person and is a great conversation piece.
I followed another user's advice and finished my tabletop with 4 layers of tung oil, followed by a beeswax treatment at the end and it's not only much more beautiful, but I feel better about using the table because it's better protected.
Our table's legs came with the bottom 2 inches unpainted (all four legs), which is supposed to provide "character", but it's a bit too uniform to be character... However, I'm not going to worry about it, because the table is still absolutely fabulous!!

beautiful table w/character
Date: 12/03/2009
It's a gorgeous table, and as others have commented, very heavy. We stained it w/three coats to protect it and though not "raw" or as natural as it originally came, it's even more pretty and now should last longer.
It arrived already assembled. The delivery guys didn't assemble in our house, and so I'm not sure how it was stored until our agreed delivery date. It does sometimes look a little warped in the middle, and I'm hoping that's how a large table made w/several pieces of wood comes (rather than if the delivery guys stored something heavy on top).
The legs are different, and I didn't realize how different they'd be since the pictures are the same. One of our legs is actually shorter than the rest and has a longer foot to accommodate. Other than that character trait and possible warpness, the table is as imagined.

Gorgeous, solid, wonderful
Date: 11/28/2009
1. Easy to assemble and disassemble, which is great for moving. (It's supposed to be assembled by the delivery guys. My delivery team politely declined and left, leaving me to put it together myself. Side note: when I told CB2 about this, the agent apologized profusely, gave me her direct line to call back with any assembly problems, and promptly offered to refund my shipping costs.) Assembly took 10 minutes and could not have been easier.
2. Just beautiful. I strongly recommend the same tung oil treatment as most others here. I could only find Formby's High Gloss or Formby's Low Gloss - I went with the high gloss, which is really more like a semi-gloss if you do very thin coats and plenty of rubbing, and it came out fantastic. Very low odor, very low mess. You're gonna want to do at least 4 coats over a few days before using it, but each coat takes about 30 minutes max to do.
3. Seats 6 comfortably, seats 8... if the 6 on the sides are friendly with one another. But it can do 8.
4. This is both a pro and a con: this table is UNBELIEVABLY heavy. I mean, it's solid - it's not going anywhere. But I'm a relatively strong guy and there is simply no way I'm moving that table by myself.
BOTTOM LINE: It's a stunning table if that kind of repurposed / rough-hip look works with your aesthetic. Everyone who has walked into our house comments on it. I'm really happy with it.

HEAVY TABLE! ...a week project
Date: 11/24/2009
One thing to note is, this is a HEAVY table for its size. I live in a 5 floor walk up apartment. CB2 will only deliver to the 3rd fl. Then you have to either carry yourself, or pay and additional $15 per box per floor.
Me and my husband thought we could handle it, so we sent the delivery guys on their way. OMG, this table is HEAVY! I think its 170 lbs. Its as thick as a butchers block! I suggest you have 2 strapping males, maybe even 3 to carry this table if needed.
I read all the reviews and did some research on what kind on finnish to put on the table. Please note, the table comes raw. You have to put some sort of a seal to keep it from getting rings... We put Teak oil. 3 coats, top and bottom. It took at least 24 hours to dry between coats. We sanded in-between coats with fine 0000 steel wool. If you want a perfect smooth table, you will need to give this table a major sanding before putting any finnish on it.
This project took about a week to complete. Just know what you are in for. The table is priced well, because it is an un-finished table. The hand rubbed oil takes some time, but really makes the table worth double.
By the way, does anyone have any tips on how to darken the sanded spots on the metal legs? The top and bottom of legs are sanded so that the dark grey patina is worn off. I tried using a metal patina and had no luck. Any tips?

Awesome Table
Date: 11/14/2009
This table is very cool in both the light unfinished color that it comes in and in a finished color. I used a clear finish and sealer and a bees wax preserver on mine. This gives the table a dark rich color which looks awesome with the complexity of the table top.
It is a heavy table, a solid table and I like that. I'm 5'10'' and can sit comfortably at it.
Though I love the table you should note that there may be pits in the table top. That is small natural grooves and cracks that might give you a splinter. So you may want to give the table a light sanding to get it smooth. It also comes with a light tooth to it, if you like that its fine or you can give the table a quick sanding and have it smooth.
In all I really like the table and am glad I got it.

Cool with Flaws
Date: 11/12/2009
Saw the table in the store and thought it would work well in our dining room. It has a very unique look and reasonably priced, however, the table was visibly bowed in the middle where there are no support brackets. Saal wood is a heavy and dense wood and additional support in the middle probably would have kept this table from sagging in the middle. I ended up returning the table.

Beautiful and Just As Expected
Date: 11/08/2009
This table is gorgeous! It looks exactly like the catalog and online pictures and is a great piece of furniture that I can see our family enjoying for years to come. The rustic top is a perfect juxtapose to the modern legs, giving the table a more refined, contemporary look. We paired it with a mixture of Pony (sides) and Diego (2 at the ends) chairs. Again, this table is everything we expected!

Loving it!
Date: 11/07/2009
We had been wanting this table for sometime and finally had the space for it. We LOVE it! We took reviewers' suggestions and used Beeswax on the table to protect it and it looks even better. It darkened the table and highlights the grain variations. I would highly recommend this table. We are thinking about getting the matching coffee table too!

Beautiful Table: Advice for finishing
Date: 10/31/2009
The table is beautiful, the delivery was smooth and they assembled the table then took away all the packing. Seats 6 to 8 and the size of the table is perfect and does not take over the room. I bought 6 short back chocolate brown leather chairs that look amazing with the new table. After consulting with a professional woodworker at a local custom wood shop you might consider following finishing suggestions: Buy Minwax Tung Oil, Mineral spirits, disposable plastic gloves, 4 wide foam applicators with wood handles, 4 sheets of 600 grit sand paper, 1 bag of rags and a roll of thick heavy mill plastic to place under the table when you apply the finish. 1st apply mineral spirits to clean the table once dry apply tongue oil wait 10 minutes and rub it out with a rag, dry for 24 hours and then light sand between coats to get the smooth finish. Make sure to open a window for venting its not that bad of a smell and dissipates quickly. After each application take the rags, disposable applicator and the plastic gloves and run them under water till they are completely wet, then take them out side and lay them out flat to dry before you throw then away. This is a safe way to get the rags to dry out so they are not combustible. The total cost of goods to finish the table was around 30. dollars.
4 coats and the table really shows off its beauty in the grain and black hues this process darkens the table but shows off the wood and its a protective finish rather than just oil and bees wax that wears off and does not protect your investment from staining. Do this IMMEDIATELY - water / heat will stain the unfinished wood. I was amazed at how elegant and simplistic the table looks and how its time less look will enhance my dinning room for years to come. One last thing the finishing of the table was easy just read the product labels and take your time, it took 15 minutes a day for 4 days to complete the table to a satin finish, if it has a little more sheen than you like you can run the 600 grit sand paper lightly over the final dry coat to get the desired sheen on the finish. Enjoy your new purchase, I love mine. Cheers

More than happy
Date: 10/26/2009
I am of a mom of 6 boys. I needed a table that would be sturdy with NO veneer. I hate the stuff. I love the idea of using reclaimed anything. I bought this table based on reviews. It came and we are thrilled. We put 3 coats of beeswax oil purchased from Ace hardware. It made the table look awesome! Really rich. My husband is very New England and I am artsy and modern...so, it fits us both! We couldn't be happier. This table will be around for a LONG time. BUY it, you wont be sorry!

stunning wood grains, great size
Date: 10/24/2009
this table is certainly worth the backorder wait. We waited nearly 8 weeks and i'm certainly glad i did. The only "negative" (which is tiny) is that the small "exposed metal" areas on the leg that they mention, are actually more like a 1 inch exposed metal area both at the top and bottom of the leg. At first out of the box i thought this would be a show stopper, but once i got the legs on it really worked with the industrial / rustic look of this table. Then, once we applied Minwax Tung Oil the table REALLY came to life - i can't tell you how it truly transformed the wood! Do this IMMEDIATELY - water / heat will stain the unfinished wood. Be prepared, the tung oil will really bring out the red tones and deep rich black tones but it is GORGEOUS! looks even better than the photo on the site. Looks great with the Diego black / chrome chairs - fits 3 comfortably on each side, and an additional two on the ends.
